Looking for a Singapore Freelance Illustrator but wondering how an illustration comes to life? Each artwork goes through several stages before it’s complete. Whether it’s for a storybook, novel cover, zine, or custom commission, the process takes time. In this post, I’ll walk you through my creative process. From sketch to final illustration, here’s what to expect when working with me.
1️⃣ Step 1: Understanding the Project
Before I even pick up my stylus, I take time to fully understand the client’s vision. To ensure clarity from the start, I gather details such as:
- The purpose of the illustration (e.g., book cover, editorial piece, branding)
- Preferred style and color palette
- Specific elements or themes to include
- Project deadlines and budget
The more details, the better! Having a clear brief ensures we’re on the same page from the start.
2️⃣ Step 2: Brainstorming & Research
With all the details in place, I move on to researching and gathering inspiration. This step is crucial for refining the concept and may include:
- Looking at references (photos, artworks, mood boards)
- Studying relevant themes (e.g., historical settings, fantasy creatures)
- Sketching rough thumbnails to explore different compositions
This stage helps me refine the concept before moving on to the actual drawing.
3️⃣ Step 3: Sketching & Composition
At this stage, I create rough sketches to map out the composition and overall layout. To refine the concept further:
- Different poses, perspectives, and arrangements are tested
- Clients review and provide feedback on initial drafts
- The basic structure is finalized before moving forward
This stage is crucial because revisions are easiest to make at the sketching phase!
4️⃣ Step 4: Refining the Line Art
With the sketch approved, I refine the lines and enhance the details, bringing the illustration closer to its final form. Depending on the chosen style:
✅ Lines may remain visible for a hand-drawn or inked look
✅ They might serve as a foundation for digital painting
At this point, I confirm any final adjustments before adding colors.
5️⃣ Step 5: Coloring & Shading
Color brings everything to life! I carefully choose a palette that matches the mood of the illustration. This involves:
- Base colors – Filling in the main areas
- Shadows & highlights – Adding depth and dimension
- Texture & effects – Enhancing the final look with brushes and overlays
If the illustration requires a specific atmosphere or lighting effect, this is where I refine those details.
6️⃣ Step 6: Final Touches & Delivery
Once the coloring is complete, I focus on the finishing touches. This final stage ensures the illustration is polished and includes:
- Additional textures or effects
- Minor refinements based on feedback
- Preparing the file in the required format (JPG, PNG, PDF, etc.)
Once everything looks perfect, I deliver the completed artwork, ready for use! 🎉
